There should be j-clips behind that and screws into the j-clips. Clips could still be there.

U-Clip.
Note fasteners with sheet metal thread.
I'm not sure that's what is used in the location asked about in this thread.
It's possible that's a flat head machine screw.
A look at the AIM will clarify it.

Thanks. I'm familiar with the fasteners; what I want to know is what is the function of whatever they're holding in my car, especially this odd little lever on the left but also that hole on the right (see original post photo).

I’m not completely sure but it looks like it could be an adjustment for the air vents. On the left side anyway.

That lever on the left is for air flow control. What I found said that it was on factory A/C cars only. I am guessing that the factory screws had to be drilled out for one reason or another.

The hole on the right side is where a screw goes that just holds everything together. Looks like the recess has been broken.

Thanks, Josh. Now I see that the lever does move the flaps inside the vents on both sides, even though whatever was mounted in the hole on the right is missing.
