Default Problems setting the timing

I’m trying to set the timing on my 75 With the l48 (I have never done timing before) and all the videos that I have watched have had a little bracket thing that shows when you are at top dead center when the line on the harmonic balancer lines up with it. Mine does not have the bracket. Is there something different on this specific model, or am I missing something? It could also have been removed because I believe the original owner put some racing cams on it just judging by how raspy the engine is and he may have drilled it out and made it a 383 which would require a different harmonic balancer.

If it’s missing you’ll have to find out the diameter of your harmonic balancer (which doesn’t necessarily have to be different because it’s a 383) then buy the correct timing pointer you can bolt onto the timing cover. Do you have a picture of the area?

Either add timing degree tape to the balancer or bolt the timing tab to the timing cover.

Crusher

Might post a photo of your harmonic damper aka balancer. GM moved that timing mark around over the years.

Pull a valve cover and ensure motor is at TDC on #1. Then check where that timing mark lines up with your new timing indicator (bracket).

If ok, then all is well. If not, then investigate if issue is balancer or bracket.

I’m supposed to be looking at it from the drivers side, right?

Yes it's definitely missing. You will need a bolt on timing tab after determining whether you have a 6" or 8" balancer. After installing it your next step is to confirm the TDC mark, Zero.

IMO, that appears to be the OE balancer. L48 balancer was 6 3/4".

If the previous owner built a 383 and used the OE balancer, I would expect that thing to shake like crazy.

yeah, if it is a 383 it would definitely have a balancer for a 383. The little bit that I have ran the engine, it has been pretty stable. It just doesn’t like to stay running and it backfires a lot.
