Without changing the entire exhaust system what's tge best muffler i can put on my stock 77 corvette L-48. 4 speed to get a nice sound and crackle when backing down through the gears, any help would be appriciated
Chambered exhaust will cackle and pop on decel with factory manifolds. No mufflers. But that's changing the whole exhaust.
Cackle and pop with mufflers?
Your dreaming.
Just changing mufflers may not give you the sound you are looking for and could kill performance.
The best way to get the type of sound you are looking for and improve the performance of your car is to change the full exhaust system.
If you don’t want to go to long tube headers, then run a good set of exhaust manifolds, dual exhaust, an H pipe or X pipe, and a good set of flow through mufflers.
Long tube headers, crossover pipe, magnaflow mufflers on my 1975 L48. Nice sound, no popping on decel.... just a tiny bit of drone at low RPM.... local shop built me the system and overall I am pleased.

Isn't the stock system a single exhaust through a single catalytic converter (dual in/single out), then goes back to the rear diff & splits into duals again with the dual mufflers? Or is your system already duals with stuffy mufflers at the back? What's your system diameter?

Yes. If it's stock (as described), it will always sound weak without fixing ALL of that. The original cat is probably clogged, too. A pair of high-flow cats can be added to a true dual system, if needed.
The engine needs to be rebuilt to better than 8:1 compression to really get the sound the OP wants, though.
I put Black widow angry house wife edition mufflers on mine and its as rowdy sounding as it gets. I do have long tube headers with 2.5" pipes all the way back.

"Angry house wife" mufflers? You have got to be shi**ing me. Those would have to have a high pitched shrieking sound, followed by a door slamming & then a car leaving. I would divorce those.

Yea, I couldn't believe it either so I just had to check.
