I am in the process of removing all the chrome items from the car to prepare for paint.
When I removed the left door panel and looked inside, this is what I found. I assume he didn't have the proper clip.
Also, how to you get the nut on and tightened on the stud with the arrow? The PO didn't put one on each side.
Do I have to remove the lock mechanism?
I will have more questions as I go along. I am finding an array of wrong bolts, he even used a metric bolt on the left rear bumper, slotted, hex and large Philips screws holding various trim on.

If you remove the screws in the door jamb holding the door latch and let the latch drop a bit it gives you more room, I also spread out a microfiber cloth in the door under what im working on so when I drop a bolt or clip it doesn't drop to the bottom of the door.
order yourself some new clips for your reassembly

Here is a tip for when you are putting it all back together regarding the clip from the first picture. I can't tell you how many times I was trying to adjust the length of that rod, then put it into the clip then slide the clip in place. I finally learned the hard way that the clip is designed so that in order to remove it, you have to slide the clip back and then the ends open up and you can get the rod out. But to install it, push the clip into place on the lever, adjust the rod length, then just push it into the clip. The end will open enough for the indent in the rod to go into place. It is early in the morning so I might not be explaining it clearly, but you get the idea. Good luck on your project.

In looking at your 1st photo it appears the opening in the fiberglass for the lock cylinder MAY have been 'rounded' out a bit.
Check to make sure the cylinder doesn't turn in the opening.
Hate to discover that AFTER paint.

That stud is the rear bolt for the door handle. if you raise the handle you can get the nut started, then put a nut on the forward stud.
