Default vacuum lines

Hello, I could use a little help. I need some kind of diagram illustrating where the vacuum lines are supposed to be routed on my 81 vette. You see, I bought this car a few years ago, and the vacuum lines have been messed with and it's burning VERY VERY RICH. There are vacuum lines unhooked and plugged. I sincerely appreciate any advice to this thread.

Respectfully, Derrick Gibson

P.S. I get 7.5 miles/gal.

'81 was the first year for GM's CCC (Computer Carburetor Control) system. This is a computer controlled feedback system with many sensors and controlled parameters such as fuel and ignition timing. It sounds like you may have a serious failure that has put the system into default failure mode and that the carburetor is now running max rich and the timing has no advance. Do you see a "check engine" light on? Do you even see a "check engine" light during the initial engine start up bulb test?

sometimes....SOMETIMES the "check engine light" comes on. The previous owner obviously didn't know how to fix this problem, so he just rigged **** together. Yes, there are at least 2 sensors I've noticed that are unhooked. Where should I start with this problem? I drive this vette everyday, so how much power/performance am I losing as a result of this jacked up configuration??

You're losing alot of power running like that, not to mention the carbon buildup you're getting in the cylinders/intake. Someone on this forum must have a vacuum diagram for that thing so...

If it is hopeless, I would call Dr Rebuild and order their vacuum line kit for your car. They may also have any missing sensors. As a start check this link out for a 1981 automatic transmission car - guessed on that but they sell for the 4-speed as well. Check them out online here:

Perhaps you could get their kit, refer to their excellent routing diagram that comes with it (if the embedded diagram on the link does not work for you - it didn't for me), and go to local dealer to buy any sensors that may be missing that you couldn't get from Dr Rebuild. Sounds like a real PITA but you can get it all sorted out. At least the car is running for you while you sort it all out!

Autozone's website has vacuum diagrams for all C-3's, all configurations in the service manual section. Sensors for an 81 can be bought anywhere, they are not Corvette-specific. If you still have the electronic carb and your computer is working, check the codes first by jumpering out the ALDL connector and counting the flashes on the "Check Engine" light, then begin troubleshooting.
