Default steering problem

I need help from anyone about a steering control valve.About six months ago I installed a rebuilt control valve on my 80,it never leaked but the excessive steering play problem did not go away and I was told by a local vette repair shop that I have a loose control valve and that I should replace it with a new one.He showed me a new one that was going into another vette and pointed out that the ball stud was very snug on the newone,on the rebuilt one it was loose,he recommended that I return it to where I bought it and order a new one I purchased the rebuilt one from an auto parts store. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

Did you check your steering box for play?
I would think a loose ball in the valve would create a wobble during driving similar to a loose tie rod end. Excessive play usually comes form the steering box.
There is an adjustment on the top to adjust out some looseness.
Check that out before sending the valve back.

There are some other recent threads on this subject. Seems that a new PS valve is better than a rebuilt one - same for steering box rebuild if you can't adjust out the slop. When they rebuild steering boxes it's better to get new parts in there... So I have read here... That's where I am headed (new PS valve and steering box rebuilt with new guts) if I don't get my steering tightened up along the way...

On the steering boxes, the gears may not be bad especially if the car is PS one. The biggest problem is people adjusting them wrong and causing wear. If you automatically specify new gears your cost jumps up an extra $200 in addition to the normal $150-$250 cost. If the gears are good a custom rebuild would cost much less then a new box.
On the CV, check the archives. There is a lot of info on them.

there has been alot of talk about this lately, and alot of folks are in the dark including myself. pretty much the conclusion was to get a new one, because the old ones have been rebuilt either to many times or wrong. im about to replace for the third time and its gonna be a new one

Default Bingo!

I'm in the dark as well - but I agree: new PS control valve for me!
