Please pardon this post, it may be slightly off-topic. My wife and I are saying goodbye to NJ and are shufflin' off to the Buffalo area in the Spring. Tough for a Jets fan but what the heck. If there are any forum members out there who can give us any advice about the Vette scene, good shops/shows/cruises, quality of life in general, dealing with snow, etc. we'd be very grateful.
I went to college there. They are serious about the alternate side of the street parking....leave you car one the wrong side and they will plow you in a mile deep. Other than that its not really a bad town.
Best wings are in Amherst at Duffs...best wings in the country. Anchor bar will claim they invented them...and perhaps they did but Duff's are still the best.
Anchor bar on Main was the original home of the chicken wing. Frank and Theresa's original recipie is the best IMHO. Duffs is good if you want a little more meat on the bones as those are generaly bigger in my experience. I like mine well done. Either way, you can't go wrong if you wash them down with some Genny Screamers
There used to be a great cruise-in place out on Transit road called "The Inn-field" but it has been some time so maybe it is not happenin' anymore?
I like Buffalo personaly but my career drew me away as it did for so many. I have family there and I still enjoy a road trip home when ever I get an excuse. LOTS of car things to do there.
Welcome to Western NY. Im somewhat new to the forum as I've only had my Vette since last summer. Im in Niagara Falls. There are lots of cruise nights here in the summer, probably every night somewhere if you dont mind driving 30 or 40 minutes. Not much to do in the winter except ski, snowmobile, play hockey and drink beer.
I lived in Syracuse NY (23 years) & Binghamton NY (7 years)..... and Parsippany NJ (9 years) and Budd Lake NJ (7 years). Think about getting a 4wd vehicle if you don't already have one, and plan on having a lot more weather related Vette "down" time.
What the heck you want to come here for? I live in West Seneca which borders the south part of the city. What part of Western NY are you moving to?
If you like to drink....this is the place! Bars close at 4 am. You can't smoke in them.
The local "Texas Hots" joints are open all night, so you can gorge yourself on our famous "slime dogs" or also called "scummers","sliders","barf dogs" etc. Then suffer heartburn at 2 am.
There is also a "Duff's" in Orchard Park. Awesome wings there. And they have a small cruise night there. Pretty cool.
There are cruise nights around. We usually find them by word of mouth.
Find a place to put your vette away for the winter. I usually put my vette away around mid November.
Buy a snow shovel or snowblower (8 horsepower) or bigger. Or hire a "plow jockey" or you can buy a 4x4 and add a plow to it. I hate shoveling, and I got tired of snowblowing. Sucks when the wind blows it back in your face. So I bought a new truck and a plow last year. It's warm inside, the tunes are on, and theres either a mug of coffee or a beer in the cup holder. Life is good now.
Oh, and please don't get upset with the city/town plow truck drivers as you finish cleaning up your driveway, and we drive by and fill the end of your driveway back up with lots of snow. When we get done plowing after a storm, we get to go home and do the same thing. Except we haven't had a chance to do it once or twice during the course of the storm. Follow my "drift". No pun intended. lol.
The Bills suck. I don't even acknowledge them. Yet we have crazed fans here that actually believe they will win a Superbowl. NOT!
We have an undeveloped waterfront that the politians are still arguing over how it should be done. (ongoing for 40 yrs. now)
We have the PeaceBridge that goes over to Canada. They are still discussing plans for another bridge to go across next to this one. We think it will get built when this one falls apart into the river. lol.
The Falls is cool to go see. Best veiwed from the Canadian side.
We now have Indian run Casinos popping up. So if you like to gamble...your in.
Lastly....the taxes are the highest in NY. And even in most of the nation. The City of Buffalo is broke. Now Erie County is in financial ruins. They want to push regionalization down everyones throats to save the city and county. Basically looking for a legal way to get the suburbs to foot their bill.
Are you sure you want to come here. he,he,he.
Stay in touch! And feel free to ask more questions about this area.
Darryl
Good summation of the local scene. Especially the political one. I live on Grand Island (about 12 miles North of Buffalo) The recent episodes in county hall have finally convinced the wife to sell her palace when we retire in about 6 years.
Everyone is welcome here. There's plenty of room cause most of the people leave as soon as their jobs evaporate or they retire.
On the plus side (No matter how small), there are plenty of great restaurants and bars. Property is really reasonable too. All kinds of car things to do in the summer and as someone said, there's plenty of time to improve your ride over the winter if you plan ahead.
Brewmeistergi,
Maybe in the spring when I have the vette out, I can give you a heads up and meet up with you someplace up there. I go across G.I. when I go up the the Niagara Air Base for my duty weekends and extra days.
Darryl
PS,
My boss up at the base does a lot of homebrewing. I never had a bad beer from that "brewmeister" LOL
