Default Share Your C3 Engine Buildup !!!

Having done the NCRS/Bloomington judging thing, I am considering purchasing another C3 ('69-'72) and "restifying" it the way I want it to be. If you wish, please share your C3 engine buildups, as I am interested (as others probably are) in hearing what worked for you. Of particular interest to me are those buildups utilizing the stock C3 small-block Corvette hood...as we are limited by hood clearance to low-rise dual-plane intakes for the street.

I'm looking at the new 454 smallblock... got quotes from a few suppliers. Problem is, I wanted to go Aluminum and nobody makes the 454 SBC in aluminum. Idea is to drop the weight as much as possible, and have big cubes. So... I'm thinking about the aluminum BBC instead. This is for my C2 (66) but it's the same parts/issues regardless. I don't want to get involved with non-stock configurations such as raised exhaust ports, widened oil pan rails, raised camshaft, or tall deck blocks. I want all of the "dimensions" to be stock except for the bore & stroke so I can take advantage of the tons of "standard" aftermarket goodies and not have to deal with too much fabrication. My intent is to try a bunch of different induction systems as well, so if you want it to be "plug & play" you have to stick to the standard dimension blocks, otherwise your choices become limited. There is a big variance in price among suppliers..... so we do have to shop around.

It's been a horror story at #@^&*%$!*() best. Tore my RUNNING motor apart in April. Put the 502 heads on, bigger cam, chain & gear, aluminum intake all on my 2 bolt main 454. Well about a min. into the fire up, BIG rod knock. Very deep. To top it off nicely I had my right knee scoped in early June. Got terminated at work for being out over 12 weeks. Something called the federal disability leave act where the employer can basically get out from paying my insurance. And STILL haven't found a new job yet. So the 68 sits in the garage. The good part? Well no more miles on my 31,000 mile car this past year. Really not sure when it'll be done now.

Now I'm just gonna go w/ the 454-440 crate short block and have good mechanic put it in. Anyone need a boat anchor?

I've been thinking about a buildup on a 6.0L Vortec. Not quite sure how exactly I would want to do it.

I just found out today that my new Lunati Voodoo cam has shippped so that will be interesting to try out. I'll let everyone know if they live up to the hype.

Daily driver, so summit (dart) heads, 9.6 compression, crane powermax 268 cam, stock intake and exhaust manifolds. I'm still assembling it, so no drive test until spring. Joe

You probably spun a bearing...could be during installation the bearing wasn't seated in the cap....

Back to our regular scheduled programming...

What did I do...body interior, even bolts, to factory specs...yup used my bolts, had them plated....with the exception of the wheels, and I have my original 7" rims, the motor, The DN 5 speed, still have the original Muncy, the 68 is bone stock down to the very last nut and bolt....
The motor...bought a 502 bare block, pistons from JE, H beam rods and 4.25" crank from eagle, had the 077 Al heads, also had the Comp Cams 288 AR roller, lifters, springs, machined the 502 timing cover so the roller would would work with a cam gear...sent the block and rotating assembly for finish hone and balancing, assembled the motor. Used as many parts from my 427...Fluid Damper, Flywheel, tripower intake and carbs...I did have a slight problem with the cam walking forward couple years ago...moved a good 1/4"...the roller lifter stopped the cam from moving further...only thing I can think of is the clearance between the cam button and the timming cover was excessive...shimmed the button, all seems to be fine now...lot's of torque, lots of vacuum, great throttle response...life is good driving a 68 with 533 cubes

My build up is nearing completion. A little over a year ago I tore into my 468 big block to make it a little faster. Well I finally have it just about back together and the old 10:1, GM iron oval port motor is now:

468ci (454 + .060")
4340 Forged Crankshaft, 4340 H-Beam Rods (Internally Balanced)
TRW Forged 11:1 Pistons
320cc Aluminum Pro Topline Heads (2.25/1.88 Valves)
Comp Cams Pro Magnum Roller Rockers w/ Titanium Retainers
Comp Cams 294S Solid Flat Tappet
Weiand Team G Intake
Holley 1050 Dominator
Hooker Header Side Pipes
Aluminum Flywheel
Fluid Damper

I'm moving to Georgia February 11th and this will be pretty much my daily driver. I'm hoping for about 100 horsepower more than the last motor so I hope it puts out about 600 horsepower.

I am building(actually getting built-- not enough time to restore the car and build the engine) a 383

350 4 bolt block
4340 forged Scat crank, 4340 forges Scat H- Beam rods( internally balanced)
forged flat top pistons
World Products Sportman 2 heads 200cc intake, 72cc combustion chamber
10-10.5:1 compression.
292 duration, .500" lift cam
Edlebrock RPM intake
Holley 750 Vacuum Secondaries

Should be good for around 400-450HP

Stone stock 1991 L98 Tuned-Port. Came from a 34k mile super nice car that got T-boned. For a cruiser it is hard to beat the visual appeal of a TPI. It fits under a stock SB hood.

ok, this is a good time to repeat my build up, as i threw more $$$ at the thing today. friggin guy at the speed shop talks me into this stuff so easy! so far on my stand sits a 383, steel crank, reworked fact. rods, coated and forged pistons, motown -2 heads, big cam, big this, big that. but today got the balancer, which is made by tci, hardened custom length pushrods, and cranes gold series rockers. i actually held one all the way home i hope with victor jr. or an air gap, with a speed demon and my hand made air box, ill see 500 hp/ 500 tq.! hey, a guy can dream right?

Installed an AR racing 383 stroker this last summer..most of my time was spent on cleaning, scraping, scrubbing, sanding, spraying....you know....When I first fired up my motor everything was fine until it overheated while trying to break in my cam ( about 10 minutes in!!!!)....ended up working out ok and I am very happy with my choice of motors.....440hp/441tq @ 5800 rpm, new version rpm aluminum heads, 10.3:1 Cr, forged rds and crank, 510/530 lift cam 1.6 roller rockers, edel rpm intake w/ 750 carb, msd digital 6 ignition, lots of aftermarket aluminum parts..3100lbs+4-speed+440hp=fun............good luck....

Ok, so Motorhead and Oregon, how did you get those high-rise manifolds to fit under the stock SB hood? Change hoods, drop-base air cleaner, what?
