Default Paint question

I bought a hood from Forum member brianlewis60 (Thanks Brian! ) and I need to figure out what type of paint is on my car, so when I paint the hood I can do some other small touch ups. It has been repainted white, I think over the over the original blue. I was wondering if there is any thinners or solvents that would tell if it were either enamel or lacquer? I have a few areas that I can test.

Thanks,
Dave

enamel reducer will not harm lacquer, so if you apply reducer and no harm, that eliminates enamel. That leaves with single stage urethane or lacquer. I've never played with urethane so I don't know what reaction it will have with thinner. In appearance, both look identical.

The other choice would be BC/CC, but it would be obvious if your car was painted with that.

So what will enamel reducer do to the enamel? Does it take it off, cause it to lift or? I will pick some up and give it a try.
Thanks GDaina
BTW, I saw you posting at like 4 AM also. Don't you sleep?

somehow you can cause a reaction in the paint to find out what type it is....i wouldn't try it since your wanting to keep the paint job.

if you wipe enamel reducer over enamel paint, you will see paint on the rag. Front door jam would be a good place to try

Sleep...um...I do once in a while
