Quick question... probably a dumb one, but then.... I specialize in those.
I'd like to remove the fan/pulley on the alternator for painting or replacement.... Any tricks to doing so? It's held on by a single large nut that obviously is bolted to the rotating shaft... which makes this a bit tricky.... Never done it before and I'm sure there's some simple, common way to do it... I just don't happen to know what it is. Is it on "loose" enough that I can just hold the fan by hand and remove with a ratchet?
If you use an impact gun, set it to the lowest torque setting and work up when it won't budge. Also make sure the hex bit goes into the rotor snout as far as possible and that it's in there tight. The rotor is made of pretty soft metal and will hog out quickly
Lay alternator on the floor. Put your sneaker covered foot on the fan to prevent the fan/pulley from rotating, then hit it with the air gun. Bzzzip! and the nut is off.
If you are not lucky enough to have an air gun, you can use the "smoke wrench" and some PB Blaster along with a hex wrench mounted in a shop vise. You hang the alternator on the end of the hex key and apply a little heat and spray it with the PB Blaster. Then you just loosten the nut with a box wrench.
