Why not get a brand new engine with warranty instead of spending money on an old engine? Rebuilds are more expensive than the cost of a new crate....and peace of mind is priceless
That's a LIMITED warranty! If there was a problem, you'd have to pull the engine yourself, give GM the opportunity to tear down the engine and determine the problem was based on THEIR defect (and not the way you drove the car). Then you'd have to wait for a replacement engine...and install it yourself.
A reputable machine shop will stand behind their product (i.e., piece of mind)...and you get the opportunity to build the engine to your specs...within the same budget! Plus you don't have to store the old boatanchor anywhere...
Personally, I'd rebuild my engine...unless it was toast!
Just like other jobs, the first time will take much longer and little things may not seem obvious. Besides tools, it would be nice to have a place to set all the removed parts in one location. That way you know everything went back in there. Little things come up that need to be changed while you're at it. Try and get these items ahead of time such as fluids. It seems whenever you need something like a gasket or hose it's never in stock. Make sure you have a couple of bucks handy for the parts you did not get ahead of time. Don't rush things and take your time. Perhaps start on Thurday night and finish the pull on Friday night. Get a good start Saturday morning and get any items you need before the stores close.
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
We are talking about the first time here, I remember my first engine swap it was horrible because I didn't know the little gotchas ( BF, before forum )
I said I would never do that again. The swaps after that I could with my eyes closed
