Mandatory in the U.K. and pretty much the rest of Europe. Strictly enforced as well!!
Does the UK parts people have brackets for the rubber front bumper MGs? I know a lot of US MGs have been imported back into Europe. I saw one in Holland in 2001 that a Scottish engineer got from California. I do not remember the front license plate. I met a guy in Alabama who was buying up MGs by the hundreds and putting them in cargo containers to ship to
Europe.
here in Illinois you are supposed to have one, but many vettes and ricers are not running them. the mechanic at work says it's not illegal to run with out one, but I'd bet he's wrong. i'm on the Illinois - Missouri border, so if you don't have one in the front and a cop goes by, he assumes you"re from Missouri, and then as he goes by you, he sees you're from Illinois, well, then he's got to trun around and chase you down. it does give them reason to pull you over, so best not be doing nothing illegal.
Your mechanic is wrong I believe. Not last year, but the year before the cops were waiting outside Bloomington Gold and as Vettes left they were pulling them over and ticketing for missing front plates. This got some real negative publicity for St. Charles and being the BG brings in some good money to the community, they backed off last year. I figure for the added grief it's just not worth it to go without. I have heard that IL was considering elimnating it due to expense and the police not typically being able to read front plates going by in the opposite direction very well anyhow. We'll see what happens. IL is typically not to progressive on laws.
I've also heard about some other states that require "One rear facing and one forward facing plate." Guys stack them back to back on the back of the car!
Great idea!!!
CO requires both - I'll have to check into the exact wording...
Front plates are just another excuse for the government to extort more money from the public.
Used to be one plate in Oregon, Unfortunatly all those folks from Califonia moved up her several years ago (and still are) and of course they wont everything to be like home so now we have to have two plates in Oregon. Why the hell do they move up here if they just wont to turn Oregon into California?...Go Figgure.
Does anyone know if in Ohio you can get away with having your front plate on top of the dash at the base of the windshield while you're driving?
It is not legal to have the front plate on the dash in Ohio. In Ohio it is not even legal to have a clear lens on top of your plate. Anyone living in Ohio should sign the electronic petition to eliminate the front plate.
Also, Ohio will have Lidar (where they take a picture of you speeding and send you a ticket) soon. This was just OK'd in Hamilton County. No front plate=no Lidar. Sign the online petition and get everyone you know to sign!
In CA you need both front and back plates. My daily driver is a 90 firebird with no front plates (not even a place to put one if I wanted it). I once got pulled over for speeding and the officer walked to the front of the car to get the plate number to write on the ticket. He looked and when he didn't see it he just walked to the back of the car and got the number from there. He never even mentioned it to me. However another time I parked my car on the street in front of my house and when I got up the next morning to go to work there was a $30 dollar ticket for no front plate. But in the six or seven years I have been driving that car I only got the one ticket.
