Use paper for masking if possible, otherwise the paint doesn't stick to the plastic and if you bump it, or even hit it with the spray gun, the paint will flake off and mess up your nice new paint...don't ask how I know...
Also Tinfoil works great for masking off small hard to manage items like wires steering pumps.
First off hello from OC. I still owe you my address for that Tuning by Lars sticker.
May I suggest breaking down and buying a compressor. Now that they are made in China, they are a lot cheaper that they were years ago. Harbor Freight has the stuff.
I used three tools, all air powered, when I did my firewall.
A small circular sander, about 1-1/2 inch diameter.
A Dermal
A small reciprocating saw into which I chucked a lifter rod wrapped in sand paper.
I also used a lot of body filler and time.
For paint, I used Krylon Semi Flat Black. If I screwed up something, it is easy to match and you can buy it most places.
George thanks for reply. I ended up buying 8 cans of semi-gloss from Harber freight and I do have the use of a 30 gallon compressor. The sanding and painting is already done. Come tomorrow I'll unmask everything and see how the paint job came out. I know there will be some touch up as getting the frame painted near the motor mounts is impossible from up above so I have to paint that by hand. Starting Monday I'll restart the process of reassembling everything hopefully on the road Wednesday.
