Default LT1 Clutch

Did the 72 LT1 have a 10.5 inch or an 11 inch clutch? If 10.5, could it be switched to an 11?

I'll bet it's the 11" clutch. That was the performance clutch. My '73 454 uses an 11" clutch, as did my 1969 Nova SS with a 350/300.

The high performance clutch was the 10.5", and it was used with the lightweight L-88 flywheel. The ZR-1 was still available in 72 and that came with the 10.5" clutch and lightweight flywheel, but I believe the 11" was standard with an ordinary LT-1.

The 11" clutch was the standard clutch used with the big flywheel.

The HP 10.5 clutch assembly that included the lightweight 15 lb. hp flywheel was used primarily for 427 L88`s and ZL1 high performance engines. They were not standard on anything else.

Default L88 flywheel

I have a 71 LT1 and it has the 11" clutch 26 spline for the M21 trans, I would think the 72 would be the same. autoxr and wardog are right-on about the L88 flywheel and 10.5" hp clutch. SolidLt1 turned me on to that for the 383 stroker I am building.

GM Restoration parts and McLeod has these parts available.

I am undecided right now whether to go with a McLeod Pressure Plate or Centerforce II. Centerforce requires less pedal pressure which I like, but I have heard of some people having issues with the weights on the diaphram sticking.

If you go to the lighter weight flywheel you will also need to change to starter which works w/ the 153 ring gear. I am going to get a mini-starter which can handle both 153/168 ring gear.

good luck

The 10.5" clutch was used on the high performance '71 and '72 packages, I think they were coded ZR-2 - I think only a handful of cars were optioned that way however.

This is true also, but only for externally balanced 454`s, not compatible with the 283,327,350 or 427 engines however.
