I've got everthing pretty much detached. Now the question is what makes the most sense. I have the radiator out, linkage unhooked, and the speedo wire, driveshaft etc. It seems to me pulling the engine and tranny together makes the most sense. By the way it is a mess by the frame cross member. What is the best way to unhook the tranny from the frame. There appears to be a plate just behind the linkage that bolts to the frame. I figure unbolting the plate is the way to go.
It is really hard to pull both at one time. When I pulled mine, I pulled the trans. first, then I pulled the motor. When I put it back, I put the moter and the trans together and I could not get it in, so I took them apart and put the moter in first and then the trans. To leave the trans in, especially if you are working by yourself, is hard to get everything lined up. I put the motor in and then used a floor jack and jacked and rolled it right into place with no prob at all.
When I did my '75 engine/tranny replacement-I took the motor/tranny out together & put back in the same way. I also, had my radiator & coresupport out, so that did give me more room.
What year is your car. Do you have a manual or an automatic transmission?
If's like my early C3 (1968 or even a 1970) just unbolt the transmission crossmember attachment bolts. Unbolt the shifter rods at the tansmission housing. (The shifter and rods will stay in the car. They're attached to a bracket that's bolted to the diff crossmember.)
I prefer to lift out the engine/bellhousing/transmision stack as complete assembly. This requires a hoist with a tilt bar. I think some people in this forum will just prefer to remove the transmission by itself.
I had the radiator removed also but the front end still on the car. I tried to pull both together but it would not go. The book even states remove as separate units.
