The factory assembly manuals are very good and you will find them very valuable when working on your car. I bought mine from Amazon I think. You won't regret buying it
The two most important books you can buy are the assembly manual and the NCRS manual. Together they tell you what the parts look like and where they go. Chilton is a great prop for your assembly manual. Use the haynes one to stand on so you reach a little farther over the top.

Bill
i think that Bill is exaggerating a little. The Assembly manual is probably the best of the bunch, but not the be all and end all. This and the NCRS will tell you where the parts go, Chilton and Haynes will tell you how. The big weakness of the Chilton and Haynes (or Clymer for that matter) are that they are for all C3's and tend to be very non-specific and sometimes misleading. The assembly manual is year specific. It's also not very user friendly.
If you're going to be working on a C3 get the assembly manual. I also use the GM shop manual (for the specific year) as well as a Chilton's and others. Knowing what you're doing, where the parts are and how it's supposed to go back together can be the difference between satisfaction and frustration.

Great advice. I have the assembly & service manuals for my 81. They are indispensible. I also have the Haynes manual which is good, but the above 2 are must haves.
The GM dealer may not have any of the manuals. They have discontinued a lot of stuff, and I thought the maunal was one of them. I think I got mine (reprint) through Ecklers, but you can probably get it cheaper elsewhere.
