Gutted the interior of my 80 and trying to decide the order for reassembly. I know alot of guys can tell me from thier experience should I replace the carpet or the dash assembly first ? Secondly alot of guys are using that reflectix type insulation under thier carpets. Do you use the same 3m spray on adhesive to affix it to the floor boards ? Then you use that same adhesive to adhere carpet to reflectix insulation ? Thanx Brent
I'm in the process of doing my 77. I chose to install the dash first because I figured I would mess the carpet up if I did it first. I used the reflectix and put it down with 3M adhesive. I plan to use tape for the carpet install so I can easily remove it later if needed. Note on the reflectix: It conducts electricity!
I just finished this on my 78(for the second time). I installed the dash first(there is no reason todo the carpet first and I did not want to mess the carpet up). I used the duct installation that was talked about in other posts. It is like reflectix but it also has a self adhesive backing. Most of us do not glue or tape the carpet down except in a few spots where it needs it...eg around the top of the rear wheel wells. Take your time putting the dash in...to position wires so that they do not get pinched and make sure nothing will rattle.
Don't forget to install a new heater core while you've got the dash apart. It would be a shame to put it all together and have the core fail and ruin your new carpet. Just my $.02
