Default Performer Air Gap

Will a Edelbrock Performer Air Gap Intake fit under a stock 1980 hood with a drop base air cleaner? Anyone have this? Pics? I'm looking to put this plus a Performer 600 cfm carb on. And possibly a MSD HEI distributor and 6AL box. Any other suggestions for some quick bolt on power? Brand of Headers, Heads, etc? By the way I have L82 350.

Thanks!

Do you have the air cleaner you want to use on the engine now? If you do, get some play dough and stick it to the front center of the air cleaner where the least amount of clearance is. Close the hood then reopen it and measure the height of the compressed play dough. Air gap is 1.050" taller than stock. I am planning to put the Performer RPM on mine (same height as air gap). From the measurements I have taken, using Edlebrock signature series 14" x 3" drop base air cleaner, I calculate I have the room. Please do not take my word on this, measure it yourself since I have not installed it yet. Don't want to steer you wrong.

Hopefully this is an expansion of this topic and not a hijack.....

I also have an 80 L82 and have been considering the intake issue with the low-rise hood and the cold air intake system that year has. The goal is a nice weekend driver with low-end grunt, not high-end HP. With that goal in mind, which would likely produce a better result, a new intake with a drop-base air cleaner sucking in hot engine air or the stock aluminum intake with the cold air intake?

Although I am using the RPM with a drop base, and sucking in hot air, I am still looking for how to get in cold air. The best of both worlds.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks,

I've got a drop base and chrome lid with a 3" filter that I used to make an RPM AirGap fit under my '74 hood. If you'd like, I'll send it to you and you can see if it fits. If it does, we can work out some good deal price. PM me your email address and I'll get in touch with you that way to get a mailing address.

Ok, I guess I'll just have to stick with the Performer non-airgap.

I have an RPM airgap under a 82 hood. I had to do a little triming because a 82 has some extra meat under it,to fit around the air cleaner. I used a 14" drop base cleaner from a parts store and installed a K&N filter with the filtered top.

I run a performer Vortec (no RPM) under the stock hood with my Quadrajet and stock air cleaner. I only work the air cleaner a little bit to make it fit. I lowered it of about 1/16 of an inch.

Go check on edelbrock.com for the height of each manifold. One thing I saw was that the Air-gap vs standard intake have the same height.
