everyone with headers
I have the car running now after a long sit.
I let my car idel for about 20 minutes about 1000 rpm.
after about an hour, I went underneath to make sure
everything was tightend and what nots. I looked at my
oil filter (fram with the black wrinkle grip) it had got so hot
the crinkle coat blistered real bad.
I take it its not a good thing right
the filter was not new, and was not like this before.
Should I header wrap this area? or no big deal?
You got a picture? I have heddman long tube headers and the same oil filter with no problems. Was the motor overheating when it did that or was water temp normal? What is the distance from the filter to the header? Maybee you just got a bummed filter.
That dosent sound good,i would wrap some around the headers to get the heat down.
How close are the header to the filter? sounds strange that it gets so warm after that
Something doesn't sound right. I run the Dynomax ceramic and old BlackJack alumcoat headers and don't have that type of heat.Headers should be cooler then iron manifolds. Are you running lean? watch the heat around that steering box too. Now breakign in the Xe268 cam for 25 minutes I had the headers glowing orange, but it shouldn't happen at 1,000 RPM.
Gary
Sounds way to hot! Running dynomax ceramic headers and fram filter on my 77 and never gets that hot and they are about as close to my starter and have never had enough heat to slow it down.

The headers are pretty darn far away from the filter.
I had it running in my garage, with no ait moving, but
not enough to choke me out
I will take a pic tonite and post tomorrow.
GTR1999 wait till you see how close my header
is to the box . I will take a pic of that to.
I have hooker headers.
Blistered the filter after 20 minutes and 1000 rpm? Somethings not right. If your headers are kicking out that much heat you're probably cooking your starter on the other side.
I've had the Fram oil filter surface blister on me, but that was arizona in the summer and hard driving.
I have old BlackJack headers and a short oil filter. The AC filters have never appeared over heated, but like someone said the header is not very close to the filter. Make sure the mixture is right and that your engine isn't overheating. If the filter temp problem continues put some wrap on your header in that area. Another fix would be to plumb in a remote filter. Also, if the oil filter is getting hot, how hot is your steering box getting. The steering box lives very close to most headers.

I know it did not overheat, I kept the cap off the radiator.
when I put it on I let it get to 220 for about 5 min, let it
cool down for a while. I will post pictures tomorrow for
everyone to see I really don't like the header
almost kissing my gear box
Is it a new engine or you just added headers on your old engine . Because i've heard that when you are breaking a new engine it can cause the header to get warmer than usual. that why they dont recomend to break an engine with chrome headers because they can turn blue.
I really liked wrapped headers. Mine have been wrapped for more then 10 years without a problem. They are due for new wrapping but not this winter.
Even after a hard run on the expressway the underhood temperatures are way down.
If the paint is getting blistered what is happening to the oil temperature??
