I have 79 L 48 auto Is their a specific wire I need to buy?

use spiral core wires not solid core (ie copper) wires with your HEI ignition. i like Moroso Blue Max. summit racing (and others) sell them by catalog or on line custom made for your car. MSD, Accel, Mallory and others make equally good wires. check around for best prices.

Advance Auto Parts has a decent set for about 25 bucks. That'll keep you going until you decide to do some performance upgrades (which won't be long)...

Hello,
The spiral core wires, and the Blue Max should work good. The change to new wires is pretty simple. One hint is to make a diagram of your distributor and wires before you start so you will have a reference of where your wires should be. Then, do one at a time so you can minimize crossing or mis connecting your wires. It does happen.
