Transmission Rebuild
My daughter had a friend spend the night with her Saturday night. Sunday afternoon her dad came over to pick her up. My wife, best friend, and I were sitting outside talking about the options for the transmission. The little girs's dad walked up and started talking to us. He noticed the THM-350 overhaul manual in my hand and asked what was going on. When I told him he quickly said that the clutches are fried and the transmission needed to be rebuilt. From listening to him talk I could tell he knew what he was talking about. So, I asked him how he knew so much about automatic transmissions. His answer stunned me, he said "well I should know about them since I have owned and operated Aamco since 1984." (You know, Aamco the transmission place!) I told him that I had no idea he owned this business and asked how much he would chared me to rebuild it (since I know nothing about transmissions). He told me it would cost about $1,600 to get it rebuilt. I told him that I couldn't afford that and I would just have to follow directions and pray for the best. He then told me that I could bring it to his home shop Saturday and he would teach me to do it. WOW! He asked me what kit I was going to get and after I told him he said "just let me get the kit for you, I can get a better kit much cheaper". To shorten this long story a bit he is getting me everyting I need, shift kit, rebuild kit, redline racing clutches and band, and all races hardened for less than $250! On top of this he is going to teach me to rebuild the tranny for nothing in his shop where he has all the special tools to do it with. Just goes to show that it is always better to be lucky than good!
On the other hand, it is really nice of him to help you with the rebuild.
Let us know what you learn during the rebuild.
). I had to remove and install myself, but man I hope for that price it was for him to remove and install. Sounds like you have a better deal with his home shop. Are you going to get a new torque converter as well?
