Hi Jim, If you don't get an answer by this evening, I'll see if I can measure my old flywheel when I get home tonight

Jim, I don't have access to a pilot bushing crank hole, but I measured a brand new uninstalled pilot bushing and get 1 & 3/32".

Paul,
Thanks for the effort!! I have a new bushing but I need to turn down the outside diameter to fit into a 1960 348 chevy engine I am working on. I need the crank hole diameter of a small block chevy to figure out how much "interferance fit" I need to machine in.

Mike,
I will check the forum later tonight to see what you come up with for a measurment.

Love those 'ol "W" motors-thought that was one of the neatest looking shapes for heads & valve covers

Paul,
This 348 has been an interesting project, to say the least. Luckly the guy who owns it isn't afraid to spend the money to do it right. It cost $2,600 in parts & machine shop labor to COMPLETELY rebuild the heads, bore block .030" over, hot tank, repl. cam brngs. , turn crank, ect. The Main bearings alone were $192 for the set !
This engine is a tri-power version and is in a NICE 60 Impala convertible, red w/white top & red interior and is a 4 speed too.

Jim,
I checked my 72's crank and it is 1.090" +/- .002" I had to use a set of ID spring calipers to measure, original bushing is 1.091"
Aftermarket, piece of crap, lakewood bushing is 1.095"

Loved those "W"powered big Chevys. Had a friend 20yrs ago who had a built-up(not a real one,but looked like one)'61 409ci Belair BubbleTop with a 4spd. I know those motors were heavy, but they could lay down the power too!!! That car'd lay twin black stripes over 100ft. Was a ball!!!

Gary,
The hole in the 348 crank is 1.055" and the bushing EVERYBODY keeps giving me is 1.099". The bushing I took out of the crank was butcherd up pretty badly and I am assuming that it was this way because it originally had a Borg-Warner 4 speed and someone put in a Muncie.

Thanks for taking the time!!!!!

Jim, check those bushings with a magnet, some have powered metal in them that could create a "weld" situation if used. The lakewood bushing is like that. I went to NAPA and they had a true bushing. You might have to make one up out of 660 bearing material if you can't find one.
Say Hi to Arlene, you guys plaaning on coming to Moroso's this summer?

Gary,
I know what you mean by the "powder metal" bushing. The 1st 2 "pilot bushings" Napa got me were that type but had a roller bearing where the input shaft went in. I had seen TOO many trans input shafts destroyed due to these bearing so I won't use them. It's funny, the box that the correct bronze bushing came in had to have 1/16" of dust on it when they set it on the counter!!

We ALREADY have motel reservations at Motel6 in Branford the night before your show!! I don't know which car we will take, but we will be thare.

Jim
