I finally got the frame off the body. The previous owner(s) look like they had a trailer hitch installed and attached it to the corners of the rear crossmember. When they removed it they cut off the metal brackets at the crossmember. I cut the welds off the steel brackets and removed them. Because they were welded on the corners, prior to welding the brackets on they pounded in the centers to create a flat surface. On the passenger side the spot under the bracket has rusted through.
My question is what is the best way to fix this (spot patch or new crossmember).
BTW -The rest of the frame is in good condition and I want to get the frame dipped
I cant help you but you sure helped me, I have to remove the crossmember that holds the rearend cover and now from your picture I see what is there , any problem getting the bolts out.

They came out pretty easy. I just used a good impact wrench and alot of air pressure.
If that's the only bad spot, you are in great shape. Use a sawzall to cut out the rusted area, form, trim, and fit a new piece of 14 gauge steel and weld in place. You can then grind off the welds and no one would ever know.
Are the crossmember mounts in your picture metal or rubber
Maybe I am using the wrong name for what I am describing. I am not talking about the crossmember that attaches to the Diff. The problem is with the structure that is part the frame that goes crosscar. The lower picture shows the hole on the corner of the frame.

Mine was a lot worse then yours. I had holes in the corners where the frame rails meet the main rear cross member. There is a triangle shaped brace welded on the bottom in that area, becomes a real crap catcher. Be sure to check around the kickups as well, especially in the pockets facing rearwards where the t-arms are installed.
