can someone tell me what the width of the standard main thrust bearing should be on the 350 from my '77 L-48, all I can find in my manuals is the allowed end play. I found different sizes of oversize thrust bearings, but like to take the one that allows me to turn off the least of my crank thrust flange.
The Clevite MS-1683P-20 set I already told you about has an .040" oversize length on the thrust bearing and only .020" undersize on bore. The next size down is the MS-1626P-10 which is .020" oversize on the flange and has a choice of 10,20,30, and 40 undersized mains. Since you indicated in your original post you will end up with .020" end play, the only set Clevite has that will work for you is the first one I described above. I would have to assume by your info that with the .020" end play you have, the crank will need to be machined wider to achieve a smooth thrust surface, which puts you well beyond the .020". You are still better off finding a machine shop that will weld that crank and bring it back to original tolerances. The thrust bearing original length is 1.7180".
