any one know where i can score a set of side pipe headers? the kind with the 90 deg bend at the bottom before the collectors? the dude that sells them on ebay wont reply to my emails and therefore cant be trusted.....thanx and rock on
There's been a lot of message traffic in the forum about side exhaust headers. You need to do a SEARCH or just take the time to dial back through all of the postings.
You've got several choices:
1) Hooker headers. These headers have the collector in front of the door (on the outside of the car, just behind the front wheel) and exhaust at the rear of the door. Very beautiful. Relatively expensive. The Hookers are about $1400 (?????) Hookers maximize performance. They look nice. They actually are pretty much actually "stock." The early C3's could be bought with "offroad exhaust" which really meant you got headers built by Kustom Headers (that were later duplicated by Hooker.)
2) Hedman Hedders and Factory Stock Sidepipes. These headers are totally inside the car and can't be externally seen, but they are designed to fit into the factory sidepipe exhaust system. The factory sidepipe exhaust covers--that fit externally under the front door....cost around $2200 new(!!!!!!). The Hedman Hedders cost about $180 in the plain steel form, extra for jet coating. This set up is the way ahead for folks that want a really steet stock factory external appearance and aren't afraid to spend money.
3) Stahl Headers. These headers will fit into either the factory sidepipe exhaust covers (the $2200 covers mentioned above) and they will also fit some other sidepipe extentions that sell for a couple of a hundred dollars or so. I think Summit sells these sidepipe extentions. I don't know what the Stahl's sell for.
4) JC Witney. JC Witney sells what looks exterrnally like Hooker Headers. They are fake. (The classier terminology is to say they are faux Hooders). Only one inlet tube going into the collector is used. The others are dummys. The JC Witney will mate into the factory ram's horn exhaust manifolds. I think a really cost effective performance solution might be to use the JC Witney "Headers" (for $200 +) and the Hedman Hedders ($180). If this combo actually has good performance, then you get a really great appearance and perhaps really good performance (???).
thanx for the info bro........ ive already got a set of nos gm side pipes and repro covers for a 69 but my manifolds are shot.......no bolt up i dont want chrome showtubes- too expensive for a 25 year old carpenter..........and as far as my pipes one of them is missing the flange so ive got to cut them(sacrelege i know) and with my block hugger shorties clearance is a problem so i need headers like this

The Ebay picture looks exactly like Hedman Hedders that have been jet-coated. In the plain jane steel black thermal paint version they are $179. I bought a pair of these just to see how they fit. (This has to be some sort of a bargain.) Anyhow, on a budget, it seems they're relatively affordable. As I said before ...these hedders fit the factory 1969/1970 sidepipes. If you've got NOS sidepipes and repro sidecovers I'd think you're good to go..
part # 68280....called my wife in here and she found it in five minutes! maybe i should let her build this damn thing...holler back about those headers for sale, bro..if they fit a small block.
