Well the distributor saga continues. On my 71, I am debating weather or not to put in a new distributor in while I wait for parts for my original. The new one a friend let me barrow is a new Weber duel point dist. he said its good up to 8,000 rpm or higher i don't recall but i know it was really high. This new one has no vacuum advance on it will that make much of a difference for street use. Also I was wondering what the process for putting in this new dist. in. I know where the rotor was pointing on the orign. dist. will that help me in the install process? Any advice, help, or tips are welcome. Thanks in advance.

your old dist was an HEI unit right? this one is a conventional one, How are you going to wire it for the different type of coil? this can be done but it may be more work then you think, you will need to figure out how to create a ballast resistor load, i don't think the HEI use reduced voltage to function. I think LARS hs a paper on installing Distributors you may want to send him an email and ask for it.

Almost any service manual will have a set of instructions for installing a distributor. Look for the directions for installing with "engine disturbed". It really isn't that hard if you understand what you're doing. The big trick is to find TDC on #1 piston. From there it's pretty easy, but you need to be sure you're on #1 and not #6.
The engine will run ok with no advance but your fuel milage will likely suffer a bit.
