Im currently rebuilding my alt. It was rebuilt a few years back and Im now having trouble with it. Where can I purchase parts? My local GM dealer? NAPA? one of the big auto part superstore chains?

You can get most of the normal parts from NAPA: The regulator, brushes and the bearings are available. If you have an early alternator that uses diodes, these are becoming hard to find, but are available from Sanderson Electronics.
Unless you have one high output $$ alternator -- when I checked on parts it was cheaper to buy a rebuilt than to buy all the parts individually. Then you have a warranty too.

I got a quote of $40 for a rebuild. The guys will even rebuild mine. It is still the original. I was playing at the rebuild and only think I need brushes. I want to swap those out and give it a try. At the last rebuild they didnt replace the brushes. the voltage reg and rectifier and triple diode all look new and passed the tests. I may just clean the brshes, bush holder and all contacts and then give it a go. The noise and lack of charging are intermitten.
I agree that installing a rebuild kit might be false economy. I like these guys. They really are the price leaders. Bought a brand new Delphi air cond. compressor from them last summer for the same price as a locally obtainable rebuilt unit. Including postage. Have used them more than once with very good results. Quick to return quotes, too.
Most of the C3 era alternators that I have had that failed only needed
a new diode trio. If yours is not making any bearing noise, you might
start by testing the diode trio. To test it, use an ohm meter. If
that is all that is needed, new diode trio's can be purchased from your
local GM dealer or from Napa. A recent issue of Corvette Enthusiast
magazine has an article on repairing a C3 alternator.
