Default (YET AGAIN) A wheel backspacing question

I have a chance to buy a set of 17x8's with 5 1/2 inch backspacing. Will these clear my calipers, and how will they fit the wheelwell as compared to everyone else's 4 inch backspacing?

Better yet, can we have one final explanation of how backspacing works, and the minimun requirements for a c3?

Thanks,
Bryan

Simple call VDB and they'll send you a set of aluminum spacers. I had 2.25" spacers on my 77.

Backspacing has no bearing whatsoever whether a wheel will clear your caliper. Here's a site that explains wheel geometry. www.rsracing.com/tech-wheel.html

My rims have a 5" BS, and I need a 3/8" spacer with extended wheel studs because the rim hit the brake caliper. So, with a 5 1/2" BS, a 1" spacer should work.
