I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but what are you all doing for a VSS? Does the VSS work with the C3 cable driven speedo?
Thanks.
Using a pulse generator that sandwiches between the transmission and the cable. MAF is 2000 pulses per mile, Speed density is 4000 pulses per mile (as are TBI and LT1). I got mine from Howell and Fuel Injection Specialties. You can get them from Painless, Jags that Run, Street and Performance, and others.
The one I got 4,000 pulse from S&P connected to the speedo cable and screwed into the speedo output on the trans. Unfortunately the shift linkage was going to hit the VSS. I could not use it so I ordered a police car VSS. it goes into the tranny like the speedo gear does but it has the two electric wires and the same speedo cable attachment.
It only sticks out of the trans. about 2 inches. I connected the speedo cable to it and the shift linkage now is clear to work back and forth.
I got it from Stealth Conversions. 925-462-3619. They also have other VSS.
If you need a longer speedo cable S&P recommends United Speed cable co. 713-690-1230
I believe that Bronco fuel pump was about 150-160 dollars. I'm still using my original fuel sender from underneath. I got what is now the "fuel pump holder" from a truck junkyard for ~25 bucks.
I made it hard on myself though. If I was to do it again I would not do the brazing of fittings and all that. The original assembly comes with an inlet and an outlet fitting. I would just slip the braided hose over the tubing and use FI clamps. Also, I cut up and reweldled the center of the assembly to make it fit (since the Vette tank is not as tall)...now I would just make one weld, or maybe just drill and bolt together the assembly after cutting to shorten. Also, I would not install new shorter metal tubing, I would just use Fuel Injection hose that is rated for being immersed in gasoline and clamp that also. The pump will be pushing from underneath so you don't have to worry about the hose collapsing.
I used a Bronco fuel pump because I also own a bronco, but there are other fuel pumps out there that come in a little cannister....I did it because then you don't have to deal with sumps, wells, and all that.
I'm using a GM ECM 1227730. I ended up burning my own chip after buying a couple of contraptions and studying up at the thirdgen site.
Still after you did all that work you still saved some money. Good job. When you said 6 to 8 inches was that the speedo cable extension? If so does it have a coupling on one end to connect the 2 cables together and the other end screws into the speedo gear on the tranny? I need 6 more inches to connect the cable to the tranny without it being bent to a 90 degree angle.
Your speedo cable, that used to go to the tranny, then "sandwiches" the above VSS unit by screwing into the end opposite the short tach cable adapter [which was screwed into the tranny (see first step)].
I looked at the cable from Mid America. Will one end fit the transmission speedo connecter and does the other end have the same size to screw the speedo cable to it? The picture looks like it will work and they say tac/speedo. I just want to make sure the ends will work on a speedo cable.
Thhanks for your help.
Thanks, I checked on the cable and it looks like they are back ordered. I also returned the VSS that I had that you are talking about and bought one that goes in the tranny. I just need a 6" extension from the speedo cable to the trany speed gear.
