68-72 temp guage check

How can I test my temp guage to see if its the sensor in the block, or or gauge itself

John, if the temp gague isn't working, check the wiring and the connection to the gague.

With the ignition on, MOMENTARILY ground the sensor wire. The gauge should read full scale. If the gauge reads, but is inaccurate, it's probably a sender issue. Check gauge reading against an IR gun to be sure if gauge reading is faulty.

If you want to test your gauge, you can do it with a resistor. Get a 100 ohm resister (Radio Shack). Connect one end to the temp sensor wire and the other end to ground. Your gauge should read about 210 or so.

I took my sending unit and measured it's resistance in heated water in a pot on my stove. Here are the values I found:

Temp----Sensor
155------185ohms
190------134ohms
205------109ohms
