Default Question for you Ebay gurus

A couple of nights ago I was bidding on a Corvette. I had previously bid $13,500 the day before, and I had been out bid. I went to bid and upped it to $15,900, and when I did, a screen popped up and said ebay reguires verification on all bids over $15,000.

It said there were 2 ways for verification, and to choose one.

1. Give them a credit card with all information for them to keep on file. (They already have a credit card from me on file). I don't think they need 2 credit cards.

2. Pay $5.00 and fill the verification form below with all my personal info.and they would obtain my credit file, and then ask me personal question from it that no one would know but me. ( They already have all my personal info. on file including my checking account number.

I did not give them anything and did not go any further with the bid.

Has anyone else run into this, and is this legit and their normal operating procedure.

thanks,

Sounds like :, wonder if the 'seller' is somehow getting your IP address (correct term?) and sending the fake info grab.

I had not thought about it could be the seller. I thought ebay could have asked me for the last 4 digits on the credit card I have on file.

The seller could see I have been on ebay for 5 years and have a excellent record with 145 positive feedbacks.

sounds like it could be legit to me actually. I know to SELL anything on ebay, you have to provide some similar info.... so it's not out of the question you'd have to do so as a buyer for big ticket items.

That is a standard thing to purchase vehicles. I don't think getting certified is that difficult. I had to do it when I purchased my vehicle.

Copied From EBAY:
Bidding over $15,000? Be sure to have your credit card on file first!
You are required to have a credit card on file with eBay if you bid more than $15,000 on an item. You will be notified when you bid, so allow yourself some extra time if you are bidding in the last minutes of an auction. Your credit card will not be charged, but is used to confirm identity - a safety measure to help protect both buyers and sellers from potential high-bidding fraud.

Now it's probably too late to get the Vette ....

Contact Ebay and ask them what the heck this is about...... they have all your info and should have let you place your bid..

I've heard that ebay has started to do this to prevent people from placing bids that weren't serious about buying and artificially running up the high bid thereby locking out serious bidders from placing bids.

...Like running the high bid up to $99,000,000 for Madonna's childhood home etc.

Not to late. It went to a high bid of $15,500 and did not sell as it did not reach the reserve.

He has now relisted it.

I bought a $5900 car on ebay in Nov 03, but was never asked to "verify". As you said, they already had one credit card w/info.

I have verified before because I was buying a $20,000 car a while back. My opinion is it is another way for Ebay to make money. They charge $5 for this and it means absolutly nothing. Wish I could get it back now but what the hey.
