Stalling in gear

My 78 seems to be prone to stalling when I put her in gear, either forward or reverse. The idle is a little high in neutral, aroung 1200. Then when I pop it into reverse or drive, it may stall. In addition, it will sometimes sound like it's going to stall when coming to a stop while driving. It almost seems like the torque converter is sticky or something and not disengaging.

Any ideas?

Did you make any changes, or is this a new problem that happened all of a sudden?

Sounds like the converter is to tight. Possible vaccum problem also.

Can the converter be loosened? Is it possible that maybe it's a replacement "heavy duty" type converter with less slip? In the meantime, I'll check the vacuum lines and see if there's anything obvious.
