Default 383 Qustion

posted in the c2 section, but i know this is a common route for c3s, and i know there are a lot of very knowledgeable people here, so i hope a double post is ok with you guys.

Another post got me thinking on this. My nom 327 is need of a rebuild, and I too am considering going with a 383. Do I understand correct that I can use the same block that I have now to do a 383? If thats the case, what else besides the crank needs to be swaped out? I assume rods? Or do I need to go with a different block? Any good formulas out there to follow for a standard 383 build? Not looking for anything extreme, just healthy.

Getting into new territory for me, so I apologize for silly questions.

thanks

The 327 block is the same as a 350 block, the pistons and crank is the only difference between a 327 and a 350, you can use your rods if you have a large journal 327, the rods are the same as the 350, buy a 383 crank or find a stock 400 crank and have the main bearing journal turned down to the 350 crank size, the block will need to be bored 30 over and you will have to grind around the inside edge of the block wher the oil pan bolt up to, this area will need more clearance for the rods because of the longer stroke 400 crank. and you will need 383 pistons, a 400 flywheel (or a balance weight from summit) and harmonic balancer, building a 383 is very easy and can be built in street form very reasonable, if you rebuild your 327 motor it will probably need bored anyway and the crank may need to be turned down 10 thousand, my 383 is low buck it is a 350 block bored 30, speed pro pistons on stock 350 rods balanced, 11-1 compression, 186 double hump heads with stainless valves and good springs, 400 cast crank, 480 lift 280 duration hyd. cam, it has had a hard life , I built 4-5 years ago and never once had a problem, It pulls hard to 6500 on the back roads, if your going to take it to the strip alot you may want to splurge for an aftermarket crank.

67 and older 327 have a smaller main journal size. Your probably better off finding a later 350 four bolt main. Around here they sell for under $200 rebuildable cores.
