Default New wheel...

My new wheel arrived today (Grant Products # 992):

Looks much better in the catalog. Mediocre chrome, basically unfinished on the "dash" side. Cheap looking rivets showing through on dash side. The fingergrips look like they were carved into the wood by a 9th grade shop student (or a Balinese wooden monkey-carver). $107.00 from Summit. Had I viewed it in person, I would've passed. Still looks good from 10' (like my paint).

Did you install it in a 57 sedan?

I retrofitted the dash from a '57 Chevy into my '74. It was cheaper than a new dash cover!

Seriously...the pic is from the Grant website.

Nah...I like the look. I really wanted a teak wheel, but I'm too cheap to shell out $500+ clams.

I guess I shouldn't complain for $100 bucks, but they could have at least finished both sides, no?

I think it looks nice, but I like the black wheel better than the wood, but that is just personal preference. Post pics once installed on the 74!

too bad about the quality issues, but hope it serves you well anyway.

i bought a wheel a couple of years ago and did not like it. It blocked my view of the gauges. Sent it back no questions asked.

If my interior was black or silver, I'd definitely stay with a black wheel. However, I have "medium saddle" (for now) and the wood wheel contrasts nicely.

Can you take it apart and re-engineer and refinish it? Might be worth a days time to make it a little nicer. I did that with my bra, it was a full one that covered the lights and looked like hell, spent about a day's time and it was worth it.

I'd have to drill out the rivets and have the metal re-chromed. That would cost more than the wheel. I'll live with it. My car is certainly no show-piece. Just thought I'd post my observations in order to save someone else the disappointment.

Danny: FYI. My 73 convertible has med. saddle interior. I acquired a used 73 OEM steering wheel in average condition on e-bay. Then sent it to a company that refurbishes leather steering wheels for the main corvette vendors. I had them do the 73 OEM steering wheel in med. saddle leather to match my interior. I am very pleased.

I kept the excellent condition steering wheel that came on my car so that I can reinstall it if I want to.

Total cost for everything was less than $200.00.

I would return it then, a hundred bucks is alot of money to spend on lackluster quality.

Well...it is the most affordable wooden wheel that I liked. I guess the old addage applies... "you get what you pay for".

But...I wanted wood. There are some nice teak wheels in the catalogs, but they're all over $500.

Danny: You have probably already seen it, but Ecklers has a mahogany wood steering wheel that is a direct bolt on for your 1974 for $139.99; item no. 39428. It has the factory style polished alum. spokes.
