i am repairing the birdcage on my corvette and decided to check the front realy well. this is what i found and figured everyone would find it interesting. the rust is not bad on mine. but this could be the cause of a lot of water problems everyone encounters on their corvette.[IMG][/IMG] both sides have this hole and it is factory and the water running down this channel will go right down in the #2 body mount. i have not seen any provisions that would have redirected this water or sealed these holes. surely chevy would have sealed it with something but the sealer or plug is long gone. i think this may be a whole lot of problems other people are haveing. wilson a.
I think the bigger issue is how the water gets in there in the first place, and I think it's through the crappy t-top weatherstrip and bad t-top adjustment. IMO
Just this week I ordered the water leaks and wind noise book from one of the vendors. What a wealth of info. It also covers that exact problem in some depth. The holes are alignment holes used at the factory, and not sealed very well. It's a great read, and will show you how to do a permanent repair on that and plenty of other problems.

Great thread. I will look for that book. What is the proceedure to fix the hole that was referred too? Can it be done without cutting out the fender. I have some water entering my mount and suspect this is my issue. I do not have any rust issues that I can see and had taken out the winsdhield last fall and all areas that could be seen were good. Also went over the sealer in the wiper area, but it still leaks.
The Wind and water book is a great read, I have it too. I also have a puddle problem with my 71. Partly from lousy weatherstripping, partly from a plugged drain hole, and I think a hole in my birdcage. My solution was to buy a car cover and a wet vac--I don't want to subject my daily driver to paint and body jail just yet. Good luck.

i took another pic. with the fender piece sitting on top and the filler ground off. i belive you could clean the filler out of the outlined area with the door off and get in their to seal it. my car is a 72 and the slot is factory. wilson[IMG][/IMG]
Yeah, you can get the book at Mid America, Eckler's, Corvette central, and probably at your local book store. Their repair procedure includes cutting the fender and welding the holes shut, cleaning and painting. Apparently the only way to get at the area is to cut the fender or remove the front end. I've never done it. But I wouldn't doubt that there are some very talented and ingenious people on this forum that can advise better.
