Getting ready to install a new fuel pump on my small block. Looking at the manual, it says to use heavy greae to hold the push rod in place. Does this mean to grease the end of the push rod so that it sticks to the pump lever while the pump is bolted on? Any other things I need to know about? Thanks in advance
Get a small tube of engine assembly lube and coat the pushrod with it and apply a liberal amount to the end that goes in the hole. This will hold it in place while you install the fuel pump.

Cold grease will hold it, assuming the engine is rotated to the point where the pushrod is IN, not extended.
There's also a bolt hole in the front of the block that lines up with the rod, so you can use a bolt to hold in place.
The grease thing never worked for me. I have one of those flexible pickup finger things, you use to pickup a bolt or socket you dropped in a tight spot. And I use it to hold the pushrod up while I am installing the pump. Small block is not bad. The BB is a bear.
Thanks all. The manual shows one of those flexible pickup tools- I may just get one of those. It seems like the type of thing that may not be used often, but will be handy when it is.
Easiest way...go to TDC, then just get a hack saw blade and put it in front of the rod, then just put the pump in. The blade acts like a shoe horn. Then just pull the blade out...simple, no bolts, no grease, no mess...
