I would rebuild the L82 but if you had to get a "crate motor I would buy it from summit.

Mike Mercury:

I'm not sure where you are in Ohio, but have you considered 'Pace Performance', a Chevrolet dealer who also sells many GM crate motors?

I had considered that, but the two local machine shops that do this work - both wanted $1400 for a complete engine rebuild. (me thinks teh Corvette tax was bein' invoked )

No way am I gonna do that when I can buy a brand new GM engine - with a warranty - for (near) the same money. I will check into the summit company you mentioned

Glensgages, thanks for the tip

Actually, that sounds about right. I had my 350 rebuilt and balanced, and had the heads done, for $1600. I think the machine shops are feeling the crunch of the crate motor craze. The shop that did mine makes most of their money on diesel work now.

UPDATE: now that I am at work and have access to the Jegs catalog, you all were right... I was confusing two different GM Crate engines.

The one I am wanting is indeed the 290hp version, but the price I remembered was for the 260hp variation.

Luckily I found the 290hp version (somewhat) locally - still in the crate. Guy wants to sell it quickly. I'll be checking into it within the next couple of days.

thanks for all your help. The C3 section ROCKS !

That actually sounds like a pretty good price. Personally, I would rather have a motor that's built by a reputable local shop than a crate. A good builder will pay much more attention to detail than a GM assembly worker.
