Default sticky power piston

I have my Q-Jet apart ready for rebuild. The power piston does not slide very smoothly in its bore. It is actually difficult to install even though the parts are very clean. How can I fix this?

Is it the new power piston you got with the kit or the old one that you are having a problem with?

Default Power Piston

The actual power piston is not hard to replace, but I have not seen one come with a kit. You most likely have varnish in bore or on the piston that is causing a drag. Take apart the Q-Jet and soak it in carb cleaner, including the piston. If it still binds take about 1000 grit sandpaper and lightly polish the piston wash it and put it in. It should not bind now.

Assuming the piston and the carb bore are clean, take a piece of ScotchBrite pad and twist the piston in the pad between your fingers. This will smooth it out without actually removing material off the piston. Wipe it clean and test-fit to assure smooth operation.
