Is the smell of raw gas near the fuel pump a sign of impending fuel pump doom? Or just normal old car stuff?
The smell of raw fuel is not normal among late model C3s or any with evaporative control systems (charcoal canister that captures fuel vapors). Yep...something is either going or needs some seal
He sells the formed gas hoses @ the fuel pump; replaced 'em on my '80 and looks like I may be replacing them soon on the '69. It has developed a leak @ the fuel pump area; also at the line that exits the gas tank. That one is gravity fed so I'll need a plugged backup hose ready when I pull that one. Wife had complained of gas smell for last couple weeks. I had bronchitis so couldn't taste or smell much of anything while I took the meds.
It could also be leaking at the pump outlet - where the pump to carb fuel line connects. A very small leak can produce a pretty strong smell in the garage. I would poke around with a piece of brown paper (from a brown paper grocery bag). Any gasoline will produce a dark stain on the brown paper. It can be hard to locate a very small leak.
I'm betting that your frame to fuel pump lines have been changed in the past. I had the gas smell and the lines from my tank to the frame lines (driver side of car) to the charcoal canister were shot. When I tried to remove them they crumbled in my hands. They are extremely hard to see and get to. Look up between you LH muffler and the rear part of the quarter panel and you might get a look. Do the easy stuff first but I bet you will end up there changing those rubber lines.
Thanks much folks...great info. I have a project for the weekend. By the way, if I have to get one, do they sell fuel pumps for my '77 at, say, NAPA?
eh howzit, If your on oahu I would go see the guys at ron's auto performance, really helpful and have all the high performance stuff you might be looking for..if not i'm sure napa or carquest carries them too..watch out for checkers, a little overpriced
Thanks, I remember Ron's from back when they were Ron's Racing Parts. Not a "politically correct" name these days I guess. Checkers blew me away once when I bought a few lengths of hose. They were about 2-3 times the other guys' price. I was just wondering about availability on these Corvette fuel pumps, since they look a little different.
