Default Replacing Wheel Stud

One of the rear wheel studs on my 80 C3 has a damaged thread and I want to change it. Can I change the stud / lug just by removing the parking brake shoes. Is there enough clearance behind the spindle to withdraw the old and insert the new.

Cheers

When I ask this question 4 years ago the consencus seemed to be that a very few people had been able to change studs with the spindle on but most, like myself, had to remove the spindle. There was no way at all to even install a shorter stud.

One method, the one I used, goes like this: First, get a cutoff wheel and open up an access point in your dust cover. Then drive out the old stud. Meanwhile, place the new stud in the freezer for an hour or so to get it real cold (it will contract).

When you're ready, use a propane torch to heat the hub around the vacant hole until it's pretty darn warm, but not rocket hot. (It will expand.) Grab your frozen stud, slip it in to the hot hole and give it a couple of taps with a sledge using a steel rod as a driver.

This works pretty well, however I admit I flubbed a couple when I did it so I see a short session with a cutoff wheel and a couple of new studs when it's time to change my tires.

Thanks for the info guys...but fortunately got it done today. The spare stud received in the post today was too long to get in...just. I removed the threadless end portion of the stud, about 1/8", and she tapped in nicely. With the broken lug hole at around 3 o clock there just enough room to manhandle the stud in without having to remove all the parking brake bits..
Was not looking forward to pulling the spindle ...so good news.

I do not run dust covers. That said I installed oversize 1/2 inch studs on the car without a problem. On the drivers side there is room at 9 oclock and on the passengers side at 3 oclock.
I was able to drive the old stud out in this possition and install the new 1/2 inch by 3 inch morosso studs, one at a time by rotating to this possition.
Remember I do not run dust covers.
