Default Q-jet Rebuild Started

I started tearing down the Rochester tonight. "Crusty" was an understatement:

But the PPG metal prep products that Lars suggested are phenomenal! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I might get to the dyno this week!

Looks great!
Is the DX-series cleaner eating the crud out of it for you?

The carb appears to have been commercially rebuilt at some point in its life. That being a possibility, be sure you check and verify the jetting components (jets & rods) against the carb number and make sure everything is the correct size & spec. If you don't have the specs for your carb, let me know and I'll get you the info.

Congrats Boston and keep posting your progress. I've got to do this fairly soon as well and don't expect to find the insides any cleaner than you did.

Well, I finished up over the weekend, but don't have pics yet (left the camera up at the shop). Below is a pic of some of the smaller parts after having been cleaned with the metal cleaner (phosphoric acid) and soaked in aluminum conditioner. The conditioner appears to put a grey coating on steel, and put a kind of dusty yellow coating on the aluminum parts of the carb.

Cool! I rebuilt my Qjet a while back on my truck, it wasn't nearly as dirty, but it ran alot better afterwards. I rebuilt the whole thing basically because my accelerator pump was shot. Started a whole lot better afterwards.

Had your Qjet been sitting for a while? Id never seen one so dirty before.

Really nice work Boston. Where are the PPG metal prep products available? This job is on my short list after my wiring problems are fixed. I was planning on buying the Q-jet rebuilding kit and the Q-jet book someone mentioned in an earlier post. Any other pointers?

Boston -
If you soaked the choke pulloff, you need to replace it.

Default Q-jet Rebuild Started

Just rebuilt my '74 q-jet last weekend. Took me 1 day to tear down and clean, and 1 day to reassemble and mount. It made a world of differance, both starting and running... you'll be glad you did it.

I'm guessing the PPG stuff will destroy the bladder?

Where does one obtain this cleaner and coating stuff?

The Q-Jet carb inlet fitting that retains the fuel filter is 1". The flarenut on the fuel line that goes into the inlet fitting is 5/8".
