You can do a lot of high tech things to your car that have nothing to do with computers.
carbon fiber driveshaft/halfshaft, aluminum engine, blowers, rack and pinion, 6 link suspensions, nitrous, mods that you engineer yourself.
Then you can toss on the most elementary DPFI system for about 750 bux,....and old TPI, then you have a computer to play with.....if you want to save say 250 on a chip....
