I was thinking of putting a T5 in my '76. What year T5 is best? I know there was a post on this earlier, but I couldn't find it. Also what needs to be done as far as the crossmember, driveshaft etc. Thanks, Pat

Both Norval and Fevre have or had T5 trannys installed. I too plan this upgrade at some point in the future. A lot cheaper than some of the other conversions if you don't race or powershift. There is lots of info if you search via Google on T5 trannys.
Check out Dave's web site http://home.comcast.net/~ddecart/Transmission.html
This is about what I'm planning to do. If you have more questions then Norval and Dave (ddecart) should be able to answer them. I think Dave was using a Cobra spec T-5 but Norval used a normal world class T-5.
Mine is in the car but I need to fab up a trans bracket and figure out a shifter configuration. As you can see it bolts right up to the stock vette bellhousing (think I had too massage a bolt hole), ths shifter does not come up through the stock shifter hole so a midified shifter or shifter plate is needed. I would not recomend this trans for a high torq motor with sticky tires but for a peppy sb it sould be an economical choice, think I have about $600 invested total so far.

I've been reading your post on this for awhile. Hope you get it running soon.
Thats a great site with some great tips for building and had updated gearsets available as well as rebuild kits...good source
Glad you liked it. How did you make the crossmember mount for the tranny? What bellhousing are you using? Isn't the T5 normally mounted at an angle in a Fbody? Also, how about the shifter... does it sit centered in the shifter console, or does that need modification as well?

I used a srock GM 403 bellhousing. This sits the T5 upright (unlike how it sits in the F Body). I used 1/4" steel plate mounted to the original crossmember and out to the new T5 mount. The original 4 speed plate wouldn't work. Yes, the shifter will need mods to get it over to the left and back some. Best idea is to get an aftermarket 2 peice shifter that you can fabricate your own offset to set the shifter in the stock console. (if this is your desired outcome)

Any chance that you took some close up pics of the crossmember mount before you actually mounted the tranny on it? I would love to see exactly what you made. Also, could you post a schematic of the mount you made. This has been on of the reasons I have not aggressively pursued the T5 option. I'm not very good at fabrication nor do I have access to the needed tools. I do have a neighbor who can help.
The "strongest" T-5 is the Ford Racing version which is rated at 330 ft lb (continuous for 24 hours). That's the one that I used. There are kits for T-5's (GM or Ford) that should increase their rating to something well above that. What I found was that the cost of the kits & rebuild was more than I would have spent for a brand new Ford Racing T-5, so I went the Ford route.
Burners linked to my picture page up above. I have a full writeup on how to do the swap that I'm attaching here. With a Ford, you need an adapter plate, a reworked trans mount, and a shorter driveshaft (among other things!).
Awesome write up, Dave! Very creative mixing of Ford and Chevy parts! It's hard enough to get a Ford part from one year to fit another year Ford, let alone make a Ford part fit a Chevy. What I really want to know is, how many different combinations of pieces you tried until you got something that worked?
Don't know if I'll ever do a T5 install because my 427 would exceed the torque rating, but I downloaded your paper for future reference anyway, 'cause ya never know. Might be handy for a C3 driver for my son or something like that.
