Default Braided SS brake line ?'s

Time for me to do the brakes on the car. I found some good deals on rotors and pads, and may get some new calipers (mine work fine so I don' know if I need to).

After 100,000 miles and 25 years the stock rubber brake lines are still on the vehicle. I am thinking of replacing them with the braided stainless steel lines as they are supposed to increase responsiveness in the pedal.

Well, let me know if you have done the swap over to SS braided and let me know what you think about it.
I also plan to flush the whole system and put in DOT4.

Don't expect much other than they look more purdy than rubber and they'll last a lot longer. The "increase in pedal feel" is more hype than anyhing else. I suppose they might if your old hoses were in really bad shape but unless this is a racing application, you aren't going to feel the difference.

I did it a few years ago. I remember there being a big rig-a-maroll here on the forum about some of the brands not being DOT approved??? Don't understand and mine are working just fine.

A while your at it... get the fast (one-way) bleeders too. A cinch when you bleed them.

I put my braided lines on back in '88. There were no DoT-approved lines back then. The only difference between DoT and non-DoT lines is a plastic sleeve at the crimp. This is to prevent chafing of the line at the crimp. They are otherwise identical. My lines have been doing just fine.

not to hijack the thread, but can you buy just the rear ones? I have a set of the front ones, but would like to do the rear also.

I also did this and the VBP Orings at the same time.

All I can say is my vette brakes are much firmer than my new ZR2 trucks brakes were.

I got the SS lines from Zip. Russell part # 9200/692000. DOT approved. They went together right the first time without any leaks.

I have them on my '77. I installed them along with new calipers and pads from SSBC. The brakes felt great, but they were shot when I bought it, so I can't tell you how much of a difference it made. But, I've had the rubber lines blow out on me in other cars and it's not fun, so I hope the SS ones are better and last longer. If they do, I'll be happy with them

Changed out just the front ones on my '81 & didn't notice any pedal feel differece. What I did notice was that the car pulls up in a straight line now. With the original rubber lines it tended to pull to one side due to the rubber hose expanding slightly, reducing pressure to the caliper.
I always change the rubber hoses on bikes to st/st braided. While bikes don't have a problem of pulling to one side to cure(!) I do notice a big improvement in feel on the brake pedal/lever. Less effort is needed to pull up with the braided lines, & this is obvious when braking force is applied by your right hand, but you'd have to have a super-sensitive foot to feel the reduced pressure required on the servo assited system fitted to the C3. Any improvement in braking efficiency is a good thing.
