Default 406 on the Dyno!

The new 406 went on the dyno yesterday morning. Didn't hit the 400hp mark as hoped, only got to 361hp, but tons of torque. 455lbft not really at peak, more like a plateau. The dyno could only start at 3200rpm, no lower, and it made 455 right from there (probably starting about 2900...) all the way through 4000 before dropping Plus, it idles like a dream at 900rpm. 5500 redline. Looks like this thing could pull some great numbers if I ever cammed it up.

Still those are numbers that will put a grin on your face when you are getting on the loud pedal. I bet you can't wait to put it in the car.

Good numbers. That torque rating will really shove you in the seat.

I'd like to hear your engine spec's. With aluminum heads, headers, 4 barrel carb and good intake you should easily be over 400 hp. Are you sure your throttle was opening all the way?

What are your engine specs? Cam, compression etc? I'm interested to hear your combo, since I'm building a 406, too.

Peak HP: 363.5 Peak TQ: 453.9

The motor's set up with Dart Pro 2s, 9.4CR, cast crank (internally balanced), HT pistons, forged rods, and my rebuilt Q-jet. It was built to run a stock converter, and thus be mild-mannered. My builder (Shanon's Engineering in New Haven, MN) used a cam that would start making power down around 1250. Oddly enough, he won't give me the specs on the cam.

I'd be wondering about the HP too, if I didn't see the TQ numbers it's putting out down so low. Hopefully it will go in the car next weekend!

That's sounds alittle strange that your engine builder will not supply you with your cam specs...you should really have them...

I would have him change the cam, if he quoted 400 hp. That engine should be putting out 400 and change with those heads.
Don't settle for less.

That sounds like a good motor for a tow truck, not a Corvette! I have a 476 hp/500 ft lb 406 that pulls full throttle from 1500 rpm with a manual (no converter stall) and idles like a champ at 750 rpm. Geez, I normally skip gears because of the torque. There is no reason to go with a 283 ci cam!

It sounded like the deciding factor was the stock TC. I was led to believe that this was about a 1600-1700 stall converter on a stock TH400 in a Vette? My builder made it sound like he thought it was closer to 1200. Anyone have insight on this?

That may have been why such a small cam was chosen.

uhm.... your engine builder should have built the engine on the convertor specs BEFORE installing that cam

I hate to say it but he seems very shady if he doesnt know his convertors
