I want to loosen up the body to frame bolts on my '73 to "align the body to the frame better. The body sits about 1/4 inch to the right side at the front wheels ( no the frames not bent). I want to shift the body to the left a little so the front wheels are the same in the wheelwells on both sides. I realize I have to loosen all the bolts at the body to frame bushings, (will they loosen up pretty easy, or do the nuts tend to spin) & what, if any, in FRONT OF THE WHEELS needs to be loosened up to enable it to move sideways? thanks for any help.
You're probably looking at some rust issues in the cage nuts at the #2 and #3 mounts and the #4 has a strong tendency to rust out completely. It's one of those kinds of jobs that if you try to loosen the nuts to do a shift you'll probably be letting the Genie out of the bottle with a lot more work to come to repair the body mounts to bring them back down again.
You should replace the body mounts while you're trying this, it's not a lot more work ....
I'm not sure you'll have 1/4" to play with, the body mounts have a pretty tight fit.... you could use a Dremel to widen the holes at the #1 mounts a little (make them a little oval) to allow a little more adjustment.
Thanks ed you had to bring that up didnt you yeah i loosened up my body mounts to shift my body over also and when i loosened the front bumper supports bolts on the nose i ended up cracking the drivers side fender, from it hanging on it.Id look at your condition of your body bushings first and see how bad they are.I already had my body off the car at one time so my body bolts and bushings were new so it wasnt too bad to shift it over,it was my fault anyway when i dropped the body back on it mustve been off some.
