Has anyone on the forum bolted a TKO to a Big Block and installed as a unit? I was planning this way but now I heard from a friend that it won't go and to first install the TKO loose then bring in the big block on the hoist and bolt them together. Once bolted together, then bolt the TKO and motor down to their mounts.

Pretty sure I remember CGGorman saying he installed his as a unit. I am thinking he said he did not make his crossmember removable. I see no reason why you couldn't install as a unit if you remove your radiator and loosen the top two core support bolts so the support could be moved slightly forward.
I installed my 454 with TH400 as one unit. The trick is to get it into position in the engine compartment... then jack the front end of the Vette so the tranny can be positioned, so it will sit on trans crossmember! You have to raise the front of the Vette so to give the room to raise the tailshift of the tranny into position. Worked for me... Joe.
You may also have to "cut-loose" the front radiator support and swing it forward to get more clearance (2 bolts on bottom, 3 on each side.) I have also jacked-up the rear to allow better entry angle when doing engine installs on some ocassions.
I installed my TKO500 and BB as one unit and did not cut the cross member. Worked fine. Although there are a couple minor things I would do differently.
