Hi,
I have a 1973 and am looking to rechrome the rear bumpers and maybe a couple of other parts (license plate holder, exhaust bezzels) depending on price. I was wonderong what the price range was to have something like this done, or is it just cheaper to replace them? Also, how is the quality of rechromed parts.
I got my front bumper and bumperettes done for $200. They weren't too bad of shape to begin with, a few deed scratches need filled. The nice thing they fit just like when I took them off. I wouldn't rish new unless you have a poor fit now.
You'll find the quality of the rechromed parts much better than they were even originally if you have a good shop do it. The quality of the original chrome was nothing to write home about. You may find reproduction exhaust bezels and license frames for about the same price as rechroming yours. If your originals are reasonably pit-free, have them rechromed. If they are badly pitted, you'd be better off replacing them. I've found the quality of "Trim Parts" reproductions to be pretty good and they make most of their stuff with the original GM tooling.
IMO - if they can be rechromed - do it.
The "new" parts you get nowadays are crappy at best.
The original parts are FAR better quality.
Original pieces...along with "new" reproductions are flash chromed. Looks nice, but lacks that deep rich blueish luster of a tripple plating that you can have done by A re-chrome shop. I had my front bumper flash chromed ($180) ..but the rears + bumperettes tripple plated. ($350) BIG DIFFERENCE. The rear looks sooooo rich and deep. If the bumpers are structurally sound...tripple plate em.

i also need to get my rears done on my 73. They are in VERY good shape, nothing really needs to be done to them. Does anyone know of a good chromer in california?

Yes, Eddie, the production chroming stinks.
However, I also meant the basic quality of the piece.
Material, thickness, finish, the whole ball of wax.
If you have trouble finding a local shop, talk to some motorcyle
repair shops or Harley dealers. If they can't point you in the
right direction, then they can usually do it for you. The previous
owner of my 75 had the fuel door chromed at Manchester Harley Davidson.

You can fill dings and chrome over it? What do you fill with?
I had my stock aluminum "78 wheels chromed by California Chrome www.calchrome.com
They did a great job...tripple plated and highly polished. $125 each plus shipping.
They do all automotive parts.
Thanks for the tip regarding Cal. Chrome! They're located a couple of hours drive from me and I've dropped them an email to see if they will re-chrome my 70's front/rear bumpers.
