Default No, I believe he means two sensors...two wires...entirely seperate

I think he means putting in extra sensors, and by "T-ing" meant such as at an oil pressure port running a physical y or t adapter (as I've done when running a mechanical gauge in addition to the electric stock one on some cars - especially if it's an "on/off" idiot light type.)

Then, of course, you would run a new wire for the new sender.

Two entirely seperate gauge sets.

Well how am I supposed to run 2 sets of wires to one CPU? I didnt think that made much sense... What would you reccomend here? I guess just find out what the impedence is of both sets of guages/CPU/HUD, and if its compatible, then things should be fine, if not, the HUD isnt really all that feasible, am I right?

It's feasible, just might have to run completely parallel systems. The Defi sending units to their CPU and the Dakota Digital sending units to their CPU...

It's really a shame that those Defi-Link BF gauges are only available in metric...they look too cool.

thats the problem, the only CPU that works with the HUD is the DEFI one, Daktoa doesnt make a CPU like DEFI does, so that presents the problem.

I am not sure I am following you. There would not be any interaction between the DD gauges and the defi-link unit driving the HUD...I have the DD gauges and all my sensors are wired back to a control unit that the actual gauges plug in to?

What am I missing? It's just two completely separate systems.

OHHHHH see I wasnt aware that there WAS an actual central unit with the Dakota setup. OK then awesome! Yea I was just misinformed. Using 2 sets of data collectors is going to be rather annoying, and a little more expensive, but this entire system WITH the HUD is doable, haha thanks for clearing this one up for me.

Well, I doubt it's actually a CPU - but, like the Nordskog, I'm sure all the input wires to each gauge within the cluster are all in a bunch. (In the case of the Nordskog main cluster, each wire and gauge is completely seperate, but I joined them into a number of 6 and 4 pin trailer wire connectors to make them modular. No main processing is done by any CPR, but each gauge receives it's inputs from the various senders - in this case: tach wire, elect speedo wire, high beam wire, brake light wire, and turn signal wires. (The DD may have a few more gauges on that main console - I don't recall right now.) However, aside from illumination and dimming controls - and main power and ground each display is really completely seperate from the other displays.

Several joint sensors would not be a problem.

Tach is simple binary and can be split many times - I currently have two tachs running of the same wire. The same is true for turn signals, high beam and brake indicators. Voltage just needs to be a pristine source for anything running straight to the battery for accuracy and can also be tapped for any number of voltmeter readings (neither two nor two hundred volt meters will cause any detectable voltage drop on a 1000AH battery being resupplied from a 63-140A alternator.)

Speedo sender may be weird. I have no idea what kind of signal they use and it would be very difficult to have two senders there. Same problem with fuel level. To twin both of these signals, I'm afraid you will have to determine the type of signal and get someone with better EE knowledge to suggest how to double the output signal of these.

Oil pressure is not tough to have two senders on - especially since there are several places you can mount it throughout the system. A little "T" right at the standard place is easiest however, depending on your intake and other stuff in the area. I would use SS for any long T arrangements and not brass (which is fine for a simple adapter) - just for physical strength.

Duplicate water temp senders are maybe even a neat idea. You could run one to one side and the other to the other side.

I don't know what all's on the HUD, but oil temp just requires another bung welded in the pan like you had to already for the first oil temp.

I don't know if A/F readings are in there, but they are for the main electronics. If you run an A/F meter, this isn't a biggy either - lots of room on the header secondary to mount any number of O2 bungs and sensors (plus they probably only use one on one side so you can use the other side for the other.)

The HUD may also have some input for throttle position (I don't know why) and possibly gear indicators. Your DD doesn't use these at all though, I don't believe, so they don't matter.

I still think the tough part on the HUD is going to be getting the optics right for the steeper and more curved windshield and fitting all the bugger in the short, shallower C3 dash top. I do not know how big the unit is physically, but the projection angle and the image generated itself for the comparitively flat (in that area), shallower C5 windshield may be very difficult. The differences in gross angle for the HUD reflected image also may really degrade the "brightness" of the image reflected on the inside of the windshield visible to the driver - I just can't figure out intuitively if the brightness would be decreased or actually increased with a reflection less perpendicular than on the C5.

I cant think about this at 5 in the morning 1 day before I have 2 final exams. I understand exactly what youre saying though. Here Ill provide a link to the defi thing, maybe you can make more sense out of their schematics and whatnot. Thanks for the info though, Im finding all of this really quite fascinating.

http://www.defi-shop.com/product/con...ncept_top.html

IF you go into that, the Defi link control unit II, and look at parts supplied/needed it also has some more info and instructions. If you have the time or the gumption to ponder over this, I think that intuitively this should be able to be reconciled with the DD system. Im assuming that the DD system has sort of its own "control unit", I was under the impression that all the sensors converged in one spot and then split off from there like the Defi system does. I guess it really doesnt matter if youre running 2 sets of sensors, Defi for the HUD and DD for the guages.

Just another thought since the actual display that creates the HUD is fully adjustable, the angle of the windshield shouldnt matter that much.

Thats about all the thoughts I can muster on this...now if you wanted to know something about Keyensian economics or Rawlsian justice theory...

Default "Man! I *LOVE* you Man!!!" WOW!!!

I did not realize you already had a stand alone supply for a HUD!!!

I had only ever pondered cannibalizing one from a C5, where they are flush mounted in the dashtop! When I first saw the term "DEFI" I wasn't sure if it was a mispelled "Delphi" (GM Electronics) or some other specific reference to the units in the C5's!

I've barely looked at the sight, but will over the next little while.

WOW!!! I see where *I'm" going to be spending more money on KITT II when she gets out of the hospital!

My first note is I would want to cut a hole in my dash top to recess that unit.....wonder if there is room in front of the iffy defogger vent left edge and before the speaker?

Default AARRRRGGGGHHH!!! "MAN! I *HATE* you Man!"

PRODUCTION WAS ENDED!!!!

OH GOD NO!!!!

YOU GIve me this HOPE for the ULTIMATE in extraneous instrumentation only to TORTURE ME with that it's no longer available...

.....the Universe is going dim....Time is over.........

So did any of these units make it to production and distribution? Are any left in inventory anywhere? What did they run? Are there really any plans for them to make new ones or did they nuke the whole concept as would seem to be indicated from the four similar HUD related links? OR WAS THIS JUST A CRUEL HOAX TO MAKE MY LIFE A LIVING HELL?!?!?!?!?

I see the REAL *genius* in your mischief Moriority, as they will be closed to emails and such FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL WEEKS!!!!

AHA!

Really know how to put the "Great White" in "Great White North", don't ya?....eh?

Did you appreciate the clever insertion of a "shark" metaphor in that?

Get it?

"Great White"...."Shark"?

See?

You know...."shark"......vettes.......see... ........I...............

I'm so good I'm a legend in my own mind!!!

Default Whew! Conditionally, then...back from "hate"

Just saw the blurbs "production has ended" or such on all four HUD products....

You have a dealer or price range?

Oh - and I *would* have slept (as I normally do during some of the day) but I had to go check on how the operation on my wee bairn is doing in the carhospital.... hopefully by Friday it will be ready to get ready to fail again!

prices were in Japanese but near as I could tell it worked out to something like 50K Yen for the HUD Concept and the Control Unit....thats about 450 bucks. That also seems to come with a good deal of the wiring, although Im pretty sure their sensors will be seperate, so you can safely add another 150 or so for sensors. There are 2 companies that sell this in America, Edo Performance out of Texas seems have the best prices. SPI Powerexcel out of NJ is the other one.
