Default Getting the center console out

1978 A/T

Is there an easy way to get the lower portion of the center console out (the part that the shifter, ashtray, PW switches sit in)?

Not easy, but I would suggest starting at the back. Remove the e-brake console (screws through the storage compartment) remove the seats, then you will have good access to the shift console. Go gently with the mounting bolts (studs) to the center gauge cluster, the cluster is very fragile.

Remove both carpeted side covers-6 screws. You can get the center screw without removing the seat bottoms. There are 2 fasteners at the rear of the console plate attaching to the e-brake housing, 2 fasteners on each side that are in plain sight and 2 fasteners attaching the console to the gage cluster bezel that are not in plain sight-they are vertical and are hex head on mine. Good luck.

This is the best procedure I have used to minimize scratching and frustration!

Also remove the Climate Control switch believe it has three screws holding it on becareful with this aswell as lots of vaccum lines that you don't want to mess up.
Theres a shift indicator light, lighter and power window switches (if you have them) that need to be unplugged.Did I miss anything?
